Havering Primary School Winners ‘Deck the Mall’
The Liberty Shopping Centre has announced its winner in their annual ‘Deck The Malls’ competition as Rainham Village Primary scoop the prize thanks to a students winning design.
Primary schools from across the Havering Borough were invited to enter the shopping centre’s bauble competition to be in with the chance to have a student’s design enlarged on a giant bauble as part of The Liberty’s Christmas decorations. The 2019 competition saw over 1569 entries from talented youngsters from across the borough.
The Mayor of Havering, Michael Deon Burton, selected Jacob, 10 from Rainham Village Primary School and Nursery as the winner of the bauble competition. His colourful gingerbread design has taken pride of place next to the shopping centre’s Christmas tree.
Jacob celebrated the unveiling of his bauble with classmates by singing carols around the Christmas tree and receiving a £100 donation to his school. The children then had the opportunity to visit the Mayor’s Parlour for festive treats and mince pies.
The year also included an additional bit of sparkle. The public were able to vote on Facebook from the top 10 designs selected by the shopping centre in a ‘People’s Choice Award’.
Following an overwhelming number of votes for each bauble, the winner was Joshua, aged 9 from St Alban’s Catholic Primary School. His design is placed on a giant star, next to the 20ft tree as part of the centre’s decorations. Joshua was presented with his award and £100 cheque in front of his school.
Jonathan Poole, Centre Manager at The Liberty, said: “The standard of creativity for this year’s Deck the Malls competition was exceptional.
We are extremely proud of every child who designed a bauble as the event marks the start of Christmas in the shopping centre. We hope that visitors will enjoy seeing the winning bauble and star over the festive period. Congratulations to Jacob and Joshua!”
